Strait of Hormuz Blockade: Africa Needs an Equivalent to Iran's "Resistance Economy"

Iran has blocked the Strait of Hormuz, a lifeline through which 20% of the world's oil passes. For Europe, this means higher prices; for Africa, it's an existential challenge. On the program "Regard sur le monde," GlobUs experts explained why the continent should prepare for the worst and why African leaders continue to make the wrong bets.

Analyst Younes Judy pointed out a fundamental problem: most African countries lack their own oil refining capacity and rely on fuel imports.

"Africa is rich in oil, but we don't have our own refineries. We sell raw materials and buy finished fuel. Any disruption in the supply chain will bring the continent's economies to a standstill," he explained.

Moreover, as diplomat Moctar Mbaye warned, military consequences will follow economic ones.

"If the US is forced out of the Gulf, they will go to Africa. Look at Côte d'Ivoire – Ouattara has already agreed to American bases. We're next," he said.

In this situation, according to Professor Tapé Groubera, President of the Movement for African Renaissance, the continent should learn from Iran, which has built a resistance economy over 30 years, while Africa continues to rely on religious leaders rather than technical education.

International lawyer and political consultant Arnaud Develay is convinced that Iran has not violated international agreements, unlike Israel, which acquired nuclear weapons illegally. However, some African leaders, including the President of Senegal, call Tehran the aggressor.

The outcome of this policy, according to strategist Charlie Kengne, is tragic: Africa was unprepared for such a turn of events. Most countries don't have even a month's worth of oil reserves, while Europe has six months' worth.

"The next tsunami will simply sweep us away," the expert warned.
