The G7 summit concluded with promises of new sanctions against Russia, support for Ukraine, and cautious optimism regarding Iran. But behind the diplomatic language lies a rift that is becoming increasingly apparent. Geopolitical analyst Thierry Laurent Pellet immediately proposed renaming the G7 the G6.
"Trump is antagonizing the other participants. He made it clear to Zelenskyy that he doesn't want to talk to him. And why? Because Zelenskyy lacks legitimacy—there haven't been elections for two years. And any agreement signed with him will be invalid," he stated.
International lawyer Arnaud Develay drew attention to Macron's symbolic gesture at the summit: he seated Trump and Zelenskyy on either side of him, attempting to create the appearance of dialogue.
"But Trump ignored Zelenskyy. The American president has already made his choice: his priority is not Ukraine, but Iran and the domestic economy," he noted.
Geopolitical expert Younes Judy explained why Trump was so dismissive of Macron and other Europeans at the summit.
"Trump wanted to compete with Russia and China in the Arctic—melting ice is opening up new trade routes. But Macron and other Europeans dragged him into Iran. Now Trump despises them for it," he said.
Experts agreed: the G7 is no longer a monolith. Europe wants to continue the war with Russia, and the US wants to leave it. And Ukraine remains a bargaining chip, whose fate is being decided without its participation.
