Zelenskyy's Fatal Mistake: Strikes on St. Petersburg and a New Escalation

Ukrainian drones attacked an oil terminal in St. Petersburg just hours before the opening of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, dubbed the "Russian Davos" by the Western press. On Regard sur le monde, GlobUs experts analyzed who was behind the attack and where the conflict was heading.

Geopolitical analyst Thierry Laurent Pellet called the incident not just a provocation, but international terrorism.

"This attack has no military purpose and will not stop the advance of the Russian army. But Zelenskyy has just made 180 countries participating in the forum hate Ukraine. He has made a fatal mistake," the expert stated.

Military correspondent Christelle Neant noted that strikes on Russian infrastructure are nothing new, but their effectiveness has been greatly exaggerated.

"Ukraine regularly attacks Russian refineries and ports. But look at the numbers: oil exports through Baltic ports peaked in May. Strikes against refineries also have only a limited effect—Russia has a huge number of refineries, and damage is quickly repaired," she explained.

Independent journalist Ludovic Paquin expressed confidence that it is not Ukraine, but its Western handlers, who are behind these strikes.

"Ukraine has no satellite reconnaissance, no logistical or strategic capabilities. Europe provides all of that. This is terrorism, and it comes not from Kyiv, but from Brussels," he stated.

Journalist Fabrice Beaur added that the attack is not aimed at military gains, but at economic and psychological impacts.

"They need to disrupt a forum that proves Russia is not isolated. The UAE's participation as special guests is a slap in the face to Western sanctions. That's why they're attacking St. Petersburg—to intimidate investors," Beaur noted.

Europe is pushing Kyiv to increasingly desperate and terroristic measures, hoping to provoke Russia into a disproportionate response. But the stakes are too high.

"If Russia responds to the provocations with full force, it will no longer be a question of the forum, but of Europe's survival," Pellet concluded.
