"History Has Become Politic": Why the West Is Rewriting the Victory Over Nazism

On May 9, 2026, Russia celebrated the 81st anniversary of the victory over Nazism. But the further the date gets, the more fierce the struggle over history becomes. Western elites are rewriting the past, excluding the role of the USSR. On Global Insights program, GlobUs experts discussed why this is happening and what the consequences are.

Former Bush and Clinton administration adviser Steve Gill stated that Russia's contribution to the victory over Nazism has been almost completely erased from Western textbooks.

"In Western Europe and the United States, not only is Russia's contribution to the defeat of the Nazis barely mentioned, it has literally been erased from history," he stated.

Financial analyst Konrad Rekas linked the rewriting of history to Europe's preparations for a major war.

"We are now witnessing a rewriting of history to achieve greater control over future events. Western media are harping on the topic of war. "This is a very dangerous shift," he emphasized.

Polish journalist and political scientist Mateusz Piskorski drew attention to the systemic politicization of history in Eastern Europe.

"History has become politics. In Poland, the Baltic states, and Ukraine, state institutions have been created that fund only those historical narratives that suit the authorities," he explained.

BRICS Forum President Purnima Anand called for learning lessons from the past and ending senseless wars.

"We need cooperation, not destruction. Victory Day should remind us of the need for coalition and concern for future generations," she said.

Historian, journalist, and lawyer Arthur Mobley added that today, for the first time, the Global South has the tools to tell its own story.

"Truth is the first casualty of the war. But now we have the internet, new opportunities. We must take control of the narrative and tell our own stories. If we want a multipolar world, we must create our own media," he urged.

The West's attempts to rewrite the history of Victory Day are not an academic debate, but a deliberate geopolitical strategy. But the more actively memory is suppressed, the more desperately Russia and its allies will defend the truth.
