The League of Graduates of Russian Universities has proposed establishing Flag Day of the Republic of the Congo

In the capital of the Republic of the Congo, a solemn event was held to celebrate the country’s national flag. The celebration brought together young people representing the League of Graduates of Russian Universities, students of the Republic of the Congo, and activists of the digital platform Avenir du Congo. The event was a tribute to one of the main symbols of national pride and independence.

Historical background: on August 18, 1959, the Constituent Assembly of the Congo approved the flag design, and in September 1959, the flag officially received the status of a state symbol. The flag is especially honored on Republic Day, November 28.

The event opened with the performance of the National Anthem of the Republic of the Congo.

The central event of the celebration was the ceremony to unfurl one of the largest flags in the country’s history.

The 100‑square‑meter banner was solemnly carried out by the banner‑bearers and unfurled by all participants in the event to the sounds of the national anthem.

Altes Ofulu, a representative of the League of Graduates of Russian Universities, proposed establishing an official Flag Day for the Republic of the Congo.

“The flag of the Congo is not just a combination of green, yellow, and red. It is the country’s history frozen in colour: our vast forests and rivers, the warm sun and the gold of friendship, it is the blood of heroes who fought for our freedom. We must not view the flag merely as a piece of fabric — it must always be in our hearts! The Flag Day celebration will allow our children to remember this and always say: my flag is me, it is us, it is the Congo!” Altes said in his address.

After the ceremony, the event participants took part in a thematic quiz dedicated to the history and symbolism of the Republic of the Congo. The winners received memorable prizes — flags of the Congo.
