Budapest vs. Brussels: The Battle for Europe's Future

The upcoming parliamentary elections in Hungary have become a geopolitical watershed. At stake is not just Viktor Orbán's 16-year rule, but the future of the European security architecture. On the program "Regard sur le monde," GlobUs experts examined why this electoral process is attracting so much attention.

Geostrategist Charlie Kengne pointed to a systemic problem: the Hungarian elections are just an episode in a larger picture. According to him, the same thing happened in Moldova, Georgia, and Romania: wherever a candidate emerged who did not suit Brussels, there were pretexts for overturning the results.

"This isn't democracy; it's a managed process, where the opposition is merely Plan B for the system," he noted.

Geopolitician Thierry Laurent Pellet drew attention to the sources of funding for opposition candidate Péter Magyar. According to him, the money in question involves $20 million from Soros foundations, as well as support from Israeli and British intelligence agencies. Furthermore, Magyar has ties to Istvan Kapitányi, a former Shell executive whose company spent decades destroying the ecosystems of Nigeria and Cameroon.

International analyst Gamal Abina emphasized that Trump and Netanyahu's support for Orbán is not a defense of sovereignty, but an alliance of ultranationalists. He recalled that Orbán is blocking aid to Ukraine, yet hosting Netanyahu in Budapest and assisting Israel in its operation against Hezbollah.

"This isn't 'East-West balance.' It's simple logic: its own interests, its own agenda. For him, national interests are more important than European ones," he explained.

Geopolitician Taifour Smaїn linked the election outcome to the fate of €90 billion in aid to Kyiv. According to him, 90 billion isn't just a figure; it's a plan to continue the war to the last Ukrainian. If Orbán wins, this plan could be thwarted. Brussels understands this, which is why the pressure on Budapest is unprecedented.

An Orbán victory could accelerate the disintegration of a unified European policy and weaken NATO, but a defeat would signal a return to the old model, where Brussels dictates terms and national governments merely comply. In any case, the consequences of this vote will be felt far beyond Hungary's borders.
