The Russian gallery of contemporary African art, Ya-A, and Ethiopia's Golla Gallery opened an exhibition in Addis Ababa featuring the finalists and winners of the 2025 African Women in Art Award (AWAA). The project was also organized by the "Her Voice" charity foundation and the World Peoples' Assembly.
The opening ceremony was attended by Evgeny Terekhin, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation to Ethiopia, and Vladimir Golovachev, Director of the Russian House in Ethiopia. They were joined by artists, curators, and partners who are setting the tone for contemporary African art today.
The AWAA exhibition aims to raise awareness of the work of women artists in the international art scene and provide them with the opportunity to showcase their work on a new level. The exhibition features works from six countries: Angola, Rwanda, Zambia, Nigeria, Ethiopia, and Namibia.
Despite their different approaches and visual languages, they are united by the theme of "Initiation"—the transition from one state to another, an internal transformation, a movement into a new reality. Each artist has traveled their own path, so the jury noted the precision of their artistic expressions and the diversity of their visual languages. On the opening day, the winners received their well-deserved awards.
The exhibition runs at the Golla Gallery in Addis Ababa until April 22, after which it will travel to Russia.
